On Thursday 12th March, No.20 Berkeley Square welcomed members and guests for a memorable lunch event, Whistle & Wisdom, featuring one of rugby’s most respected international referees, Luke Pearce, alongside broadcaster and DIY SOS star Nick Knowles, who hosted the conversation with his trademark warmth and humour.

Held in the elegant surroundings of No.20, the two-course lunch brought together members, rugby enthusiasts and local business leaders for a fascinating insight into the world of elite rugby officiating — a perspective rarely heard outside the professional game.
Behind the Whistle
Luke Pearce has become one of the leading referees in international rugby, regularly officiating at the highest level of the sport including Premiership, European and Test matches. During the discussion, Pearce offered a candid look at the realities of refereeing modern rugby — a role that requires not only an encyclopaedic knowledge of the laws of the game, but also composure, leadership and split-second decision-making under intense pressure.
One of the central themes of the afternoon was the balance between protecting players and preserving the excitement of the sport. Pearce explained how referees must interpret increasingly complex safety protocols, particularly around head contact and high tackles, while still allowing the natural flow that makes rugby such a compelling spectacle.
Attendees were given a rare glimpse into how referees communicate with players, coaches and officials during a match, and how technology such as the Television Match Official (TMO) has changed the dynamics of decision-making on the field.
An Engaging Conversation
Nick Knowles proved the perfect host for the afternoon, guiding the conversation with curiosity and humour while drawing out stories from Pearce’s career on the international circuit. The discussion ranged from the psychology of managing world-class athletes to the unique pressures of refereeing in front of tens of thousands of spectators — and millions more watching around the world.
The audience was also invited to ask questions, leading to lively exchanges about controversial decisions, the evolution of rugby laws, and the realities of officiating in an era of relentless media scrutiny.
Supporting the Sam Polledri Foundation
Alongside the discussion, the event also helped raise over £800 for the Sam Polledri Foundation. Sam suddenly & tragically passed away of a Cardiac Arrest in Millennium Square, on the 26th Feb 2022, aged only 24.
In his honour, his family created the Sam Polledri Foundation (through Great Western Air Ambulance Charity) with the aim of installing public access defibrillators in as many places as possible in Bristol and the surrounding area.
It was a privilege to welcome Lewis Polledri, Sam’s brother, who joined the event and personally thanked guests for their generosity and support. His presence added a meaningful and heartfelt dimension to the afternoon, reminding everyone of the importance of the work the foundation continues to do within the local community.

From Berkeley Square to the Six Nations
The timing of the event could hardly have been more fitting. Just days after appearing at No.20, Luke Pearce returned to the international stage over the weekend to play a key refereeing role during the final round of the Six Nations internationals, placing him once again at the centre of one of rugby’s biggest competitions.
For guests at the lunch, it was a unique opportunity to hear from a top official at the very height of his profession — before he stepped back into one of rugby’s biggest arenas that same weekend.
A Standout No.20 Event
Events like Whistle & Wisdom capture what makes No.20 Berkeley Square special: bringing together remarkable people, compelling stories and meaningful conversation in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
The afternoon proved to be a resounding success, with guests leaving not only entertained but with a newfound appreciation for the complexities of officiating at the highest level of sport.
We extend our thanks to Luke Pearce, Nick Knowles and Lewis Polledri for helping make the event so special, and to everyone who joined us for what was a truly memorable gathering at No.20.
We look forward to welcoming many more inspiring speakers to Berkeley Square in the months ahead.
